Islands is a system of seating furniture designed by renowned French designer Jean-Marie Massaud. With Islands Jean-Marie Massaud wants to reformulate public interiors such as waiting areas and lobbies. In order to achieve this Massaud has created a flexible and functional furniture system that easily can be adjusted to different surroundings and contexts.
Islands creates the feeling of small islands or coral reefs and provides space for informal meetings, while shielding the people sitting on an ’island’ from those sitting on the adjacent ’islands’ with the help of different materials and different heights. This feeling can also be enhanced by plants placed at designated spaces in the furniture. Different seating levels and different materials give the furniture flexibility and do not lock the user to a certain behavior.
”Islands is not a classical piece of seating furniture; it is more abstract with different parts that together form an entirety. It stands for innovation”, says Jean-Marie Massaud.
